Northern group denies asking President Buhari not to seek re-election

Northern group denies asking President Buhari not to seek re-electionContrary to reports, northern groups have denied asking President Muhammadu Buhari against seeking a re-election in 2019. The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) on Wednesday also denied asking former Vice President Atiku Abubakar not to contest presidential election. According to NAN, the group described the report as misrepresentation. Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, spokesman of CNG, said in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday that the CNG did not discuss individual aspiration at its two-day summit in Kaduna as reported in the media. According to him, the communiqué only highlighted its support for structural reforms with condition that only youths between ages 18 and 60 should represent the North. “The attention of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has been drawn to certain misrepresentations of parts of its communiqué of May 21, 2018 by a section of the media. While we do not want to believe that the misrepresentations, though very fundamental, were maliciously made, we nevertheless owe the public a duty to straighten the records. At the end of our two-day summit at Arewa House, Kaduna, a five-page communiqué was read by our spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in which we categorically stated that the North fully supports the restructuring of the country and shall be prepared to represent itself in any debate thereon. Our coalition said the North supported structural reforms, with certain conditions,’’ he said. According to him, one of the terms is that those who will carry the banner to any future discussion with regards to Nigerian federal arrangement should be within the 18 to 60 years bracket. “We said this out of a patriotic conviction that the older men who have been speaking and running the country since independence should cease to take the front seats at such national discourses. The coalition was, however, quite surprised by some reports by a section of the media, tending to suggest that we have asked certain aspirants to the 2019 presidency to shelve their ambition. We wish to respond here that at no time did the individual aspiration of any politician ever came up at our two-day summit nor was it mentioned anywhere in the communiqué we read. Our summit and subsequent communiqué essentially concentrated on the issue of restructuring. Nowhere, and at no time, did we discuss such matters as the 2019 presidency,’’ Suleiman said. He said that the summit was sequel to calls from several quarters in the last six months asking for our position on the issue of restructuring. Suleiman said the group answered those calls by mandating a committee to sample the pulse of Northern Nigeria in that respect. He said that the committee, after contacting stakeholders across all shades of interest in the region, reported that the North favoured restructuring of the country. “Consequently, we called for the summit at which participants unanimously confirmed North’s support for total and holistic structural reform. A communiqué was issued to that effect, devoid of the slightest hint at partisanship or 2019 elections, nor did we discuss the individual aspiration of any politician,’’ he added.

Nigerian man jumps to his death while trying to evade arrest in South AfricaA 36-year-old Nigerian man, Christopher Omoike, jumped to his death from his apartment on the ninth floor of a building in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday May 20th. Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Consul-General, Godwin Adama, who visited the scene of the incident said Christopher's flatmate, a Nigerian man named Oscar, said the deceased was trying to evade arrest by the police who stormed his apartment after a fight with a Nigerian babymama. The Nigerian babymama was said to have reported to the police that Christopher violently attacked her. “We were told that the previous night, Christopher had been very worried because he was having challenges with the Nigerian lady that had a baby for him and seized her phone. He reportedly beat the lady up later that night in a struggle over the phone, injuring her. On the basis of this, the roommate, Oscar, as part of his testimony, took her to the police station to make a report about the fact that she was battered… and based on this, the police were invited,” Adama said The Nigerian envoy said Christopher's South African girlfriend who was with him that night, said he had threatened to kill himself if the police came to arrest him and that he made good his threat. The Nigerian consulate said the South African police officers told him they did not do anything to Chrsitopher when they got to his apartment. Abuja village where twins are killed by hanging "because they are evil"

Abuja village where twins are killed by hanging "because they are evil"The killing of twins in Nigeria was abolished decades ago, but a surprising discovery has been made, of a village where twins are killed by hanging. This practice was exposed by Nkwasi Obim Nebo, a maternal health advocate and humanitarian worker who led a team of PeachAid Medical Initiative medical doctors to the village of Kaida in Gwagwalada on the outskirts of Abuja. Nkwasi and her team arrived in Kaida one day before a set of twins were to be killed. When they got into Kaida the mother of a set of twins walked up to Nkwasi seeking help. Abuja village where twins are killed by hanging "because they are evil"Narrating the experience on Facebook, Nkwasi wrote: As soon as we arrived the community, this woman immediately handed us her newly-born twin babies, asking us to take them away; they were only 2days old. I asked her why she was giving up on her kids, she replied and said they will be killed in few days from today if still with her. She heard we were coming and came out just to give us the babies! This is her 4th pregnancy, and her 4th set of twins also! Oh yes! You heard me right! Twins are considered as evil in this community since time immemorial, and are killed (hanged) on the third day after delivery. In an earlier post, the Peach Aid CEO had narrated how the Initiative, comprising medical doctors from Garki Hospital, Abuja, and other medical personnel, distributed contraceptives to the villagers. She wrote: During our health intervention at Kaida Village, Gwagwalada, FCT, we made sure every woman got their choice of contraceptives which will last for 5years, and that the men present also got condoms as many as they wanted. We distributed clean delivery kits to prevent infection and bleeding at child birth; we checked their sugar level, and their blood pressure; we administered Vitamin A supplements for all the children between the age of six months to five years.

'Any leader who can’t perform should get out of office' - Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo today said any leader who cannot perform in office by providing leadership should get out of office. Obasanjo, who spoke at the Lagos State University, LASU, Convocation lecture in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria said such a leader should not think of seeking re-election but to get out of office. The former President, though, did not mention the name of President Muhammadu Buhari in his speech, but his words betrayed him and pointed to the president. Obasanjo spoke on the “Role of tertiary education in promoting social cohesion and peace: Opportunities and Challenges for Nigeria.” He said four needs were basic features anyone leading a country must be ready to bring to fore because they worked together. According to him, “We need those four things. If for any reason, you, as a leader in any walks of life, you cannot give leadership, maintain good governance; you cannot understand what development is and maintain and cherish values within our cultures, you must ship out no matter any level of leader you are. If we continue with business as usual, our chances of development within the committee of nations will be very slim. We have to do things differently in Nigeria for us to get things right. If we do this, we will be reckoned with globally. But if we fail, the world will leave us behind. As a leader, you must be ready to Give, or get others to Give (delegate). And if you cannot do either of the two, you must Get out. If we don’t have them, we are deceiving ourselves. God has given Nigeria what it needs. But we will get there if we apply the three Gs,” he stated. The former president stated that though the country had diversified ethic groups, the problem the nation had with diversity was lack of management which brought nepotism, favouritism and others into the polity, adding that diversity in the country’s ethnicity must not hinder equal treatment for all since everyone is citizens of the country.

$16b power project ''I’m ready for probe'' Obasanjo dares Buhari

$16b power project Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he is ready to be probed over the $16b Power Project carried out during his administration. Recall that President Buhari earlier today, mocked the former president for embarking on the power project that cost so much with no result to show for it. President Buhari said the former president had questions to answer. In a statement released by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president said he is ready for a probe. According to the former president, the power project under his administration has been documented in his book, My Watch, and that if President Buhari cannot read it, he should give the book to any of his aides to read and then summarise in a language he would understand....lol. Read the statement below ‘It has come to the attention of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, apparently without correct information and based on ignorance, suggested that $16 billion was wasted on power projects by “a former President”. We believe that the President was re-echoing the unsubstantiated allegation against Chief Obasanjo by his own predecessor but one’. Obasanjo argued that while it is doubtful that a President with proper understanding of the issue would utter such, it should be pointed out that records from the National Assembly had exculpated him (Obasanjo) of any wrong-doing concerning the power sector and has proved the allegations as false. “For the records, Chief Obasanjo has addressed the issues of the power sector and the allegations against him on many occasions and platforms, including in his widely publicised book, My Watch in which he exhaustively stated the facts and reproduced various reports by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which conducted a clinical investigation into the allegations against Chief Obasanjo, and the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Recommendations in the Report of the Committee on Power on the Investigation into how the Huge Sums Of Money was Spent on Power Generation, Transmission And Distribution between June 1999 and May 2007 without Commensurate Result,” . The former president said President Buhari should read chapters 41, 42, 43 and 47 of his book, ''My Watch'' for his insights and perspectives on the power sector during his time and that if the president cannot read, he should give the books to his aides to read and then summarise to a language he would understand. “If he cannot read the three-volume book, he should detail his aides to do so and summarise the chapters in a language that he will easily understand,” Obasanjo said
